Keep tabs on your home from anywhere in the world via Rovio

When you’re off attending big shows like CES or just out of town for a few days for a vacation, who watches over your house? Like the old saying goes, “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.” No, I don’t mean you should just stay home, but you might consider this cool security bot that will let you check on your house from the convenience of your beach chair.

The Rovio would be cool enough knowing that it has NorthStar navigation which allows it to wander throughout your house, avoiding obstacles along the way. The icing on the cake, however, is that is uses a WiFi connection that allows you to view the video feed from anywhere in the world. This is one robot that I would gladly have wandering about my house. You’ll be able to pick one up sometime in the fall of this year for $299.

Wrex - The robot dog

Al managed to catch hold of Wrex the robot dog at CES earlier this year, and true to his word, we’re now in the third quarter of 2008 and Gizoo’s offering Wrex the robot dog for the masses.

Wrex the robot dog gives paw, sneezes, gets hungry and needs to pee, just like a living breathing version of man’s best friend. You can train him, play with him and even reprogramme him into a cat or the original Robosapien. And in keeping with Wrex the Dawg’s slap dash body, your robot dog malfunctions every now and again and you will have to save the day and repair him. Wrex the Dawg has three distinctive moods, including happy, angry and crazy, and if you’re in any doubt as to which one he’s in check the eyes. Wrex’s eyes go nuts, spinning like you’ve just won on a slot machine and stopping on a set that match his mood and desires. Pick a mood and control Wrex the Dawg using the remote control or set his moods to random and let him roam autonomously off the leash. Preorder yours today for heaps upon heaps of fun in one tiny package.

Sounds as though this will make for an extremely desirable Christmas present! Wrex the robot dog will ship at the end of this month, so make sure you plonk down £99.95 if you want one by then.

MobiFrance Concept Phone is an Eiffel

Ah, the French. I wish the rest of the world wouldn’t reduce them to a meaningless stereotype of good wine, cheese, and love makers. After all, there is another thing the French are becoming better at making: the cellular phone.

MobiFrance has recently partnered up with Sony Ericsson to develop a concept cell called the French Luxury (FL). The FL is designed to commemorate France’s Independence Day by bearing a strong resemblance to the Eiffel Tower, the most recognizable French landmark.

The phone can stand on its end to resemble the Eiffel Tower, and is equipped with a full touchscreen. Unlike other touchscreen phones, the FL’s touchscreen has a somewhat curvaceous look to it.

Other features that we know about are the speakers on its sides, which you can see on this photo. You can also watch video and other multimedia functions. Another feature is the obligatory camera, which is a lot better than other cell phone cameras at 7.2 Megapixels.

So far, there is no word on a price or availability date for the FL. Considering that the French Independence Day is July 14, I’m guessing that a year is plenty of time to get it out for the 220th anniversary.

Lifemap puts you on the map

I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of pictures. They are on my digital camera, my video camera, my cellular phone, and some of them have actually made it onto my computer for permanent storage. One day, one fine day, I shall put them all on an album or something as a chronicle of my life.

I believe that the Lifemap is for that purpose. What you do is attach a digital camera or other photo-taking device to the Lifemap, and you can put all of your photos in proper order. Beyond that, that is all my source knows on this particular invention, besides the fact that it has a QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen.

This touchscreen allows you to sit down and manipulate your photos with your hands, just like you would actual photos. Now you don’t have to worry about getting smudge prints on your photo prints, but you will probably smudge up the screen on the Lifemap

So far, this Lifemap is simply a concept, but I think that there is a need for something more touchscreen in the world today. The iPhone and Touchsmart are really making a splash in the marketplace, and the Surface could easily take over as the new digital coffee table.

USB Thermometer

I don’t know if there is any serious need for this USB Indoor/Outdoor thermometer, but at $22 a pop, surely there isn’t much harm in trying to give this a go? Below are some of the specifications before you make up your mind on getting one.

Temperature Range - Inner: -40° ~ 120°
Temperature Range - Outer: -50° ~ 150°
Temperature can be captured from every second to 12 hours

So now you’re the office’s walking encyclopedia when it comes to the temperature, both within and without. Too bad it can’t tell the chemistry level between you and that hot new colleague who’s sitting in a cubicle opposite you. All the recorded data can be pasted in Word or Excel, letting you draw the temperature chart for reasons only you know.

  • Egyptian Mother gives birth to second ever set of septuplets to all survive

Seven little survivors: Egyptian nurses tend to the newborn septuplets born in Egypt

A 27-year-old Egyptian woman gave birth to septuplets early Saturday in the coastal city of Alexandria, family members and the hospital director said.

Ghazala Khamis was in good condition after having a blood transfusionduring her Caesarean sectiondue to bleeding, said Emad Darwish, director of the El-Shatbi Hospital where she gave birth.

The newborns, four boys and three girls, weigh between 3.2 pounds and 6.17 pounds and are in stable condition, Darwish said. They have been placed in incubators in four different hospitals that have special premature babyunits, he said.

"This is a very rare pregnancy — something I have never witnessed over my past 33 years in this profession," Darwish told The Associated Press by phone from the hospital.

Darwish decided to carry out the Caesarean section at the end of Khamis' eighth month of pregnancy due to the pressure on her kidneys. He said Khamis, who already has three daughters, took fertility drugs in an effort to have a son.

Khamis, the wife of a farmer in the northern Egyptian province of Beheira, was admitted to the hospital two months earlier, Darwish said.

"From the initial checkup, I say that none of the babies have any sort of deformities or incomplete organs," Darwish said.

The woman's brother, Khamis Khamis, said even though his sister was trying to conceive more children so she could have a son, the family was astonished when they found out she would give birth to multiple babies.

"We thought about an abortion, but then we felt it's religiously forbidden. So we said 'Let God's will prevail,'" he told the AP by phone.

Egypt's health minister announced that the seven babies will receive free milk and diapers for two years, the brother added.

iRiver SPINN MP4 Player

After CES, I saw a lot of coverage on iRiver’s new line of products, but I was surprised that there was little on the new SPINN MP4 Player. Perhaps this was due to the SPINN being under a glass cage at the booth. Unfortunately, I do not know if they ever took the player out of its display case at any time during the Expo.

Therefore, I wasn’t able to see the biggest selling point on what iRiver calls its flagship model. I would have liked to see the easy-to-use SPINN System Toggle Wheel, which I was told uses 3-D technology for a truly unique interface.

The thing that iRiver wants to promote with this new type of toggle wheel is that it has the “warmth of analog technology”. Personally, I never saw a dial as having any warmth whatsoever, but I think I see what they are trying to do. Too many Portable Media Players have too many buttons and confusing scroller wheels, so perhaps it was time to go back to the old-fashioned dial method for ease of usage.

The features on the SPINN are many including a photo viewer, FM tuner, recording capability, Flash games (including Flash 2.0), a text viewer, and even a dictionary. The screen is a 3.2 inch WQVGA TFT-LCD with 480×272 resolution. All this, and it is Bluetooth compatible.

The iRiver SPINN should be available sometime in the Spring, but a price has not been set as yet.

Canon Pixma iP 100

I have reported on portable printers in the past, such as the Canon Pixma iP 100, but I have to say that the PRINTSTIK from Planon systems is one of the most impressive that I have come across.

The PRINTSTIK has some very outstanding features, but its biggest selling point is its Bluetooth connectivity. All you need to do is just beam the document from your laptop, smart phone, or PDA, and the PRINTSTIK will print it out at 3 pages per minute. It is also designed to print clear pages at 200 DPI, with no smudging or leaking ink.

The printer, which can also work through USB connection, is very lightweight at only one and a half pounds. It has little moving parts, so it is designed for very rugged travel.

As for power, the PRINTSTIK uses a Lithium Ion battery for a 120 minutes recharging time. It is capable of printing about 40 pages per charge.

I suppose that Planon systems has a good history of making products for the mobile market. After all, it was Planon’s CEO that first invented the Docupen, a portable full-page scanner. Makes you wonder what else PlanCo is capable of in the future.

As for now, you should be able to purchase the PRINTSTIK at the PlanOn Systems website for about $299.00

miBook

Every once in a while, you need more help than just a step-by-step instruction booklet. No, you need to have something that literally shows you how to do something with video footage.

This why people need something like the miBook. There really isn’t anything new about the design of this product, it is a simple PDA with a seven inch touchscreen.

What is unique about the miBook is the way it is being marketed. A recent Circuit City ad showed the MiBook as a kit that includes Two Food Network Cooking Titles. I believe the MiBook is designed to be some type of digital instruction booklet with helpful video footage.

I got to admit that a device such as this is a long time coming. The other day, I was trying to do something on my computer and I couldn’t figure it out to save my life. If someone were to put the instructions on a MiBook, that would have helped me immensely.

The miBook costs about $130, but does not come with any on-board memory. It is compatible with many models of memory cards, and supports both MPEG and MP3 audio formats. The miBook can even be used as a digital picture frame if you don’t want to put instructions on it.

Intel Details USB 3.0 Specs; Hints at IDF Debut

Intel issued a press release detailing USB 3.0's software and hardware interface. And given that the Intel Developer Forum is just a week away, it's reasonable to expect the company will showcase USB 3.0 at the event.

USB 3.0's software and hardware interface, which Intel calls xHCI, will allow manufacturers and developers to ready their USB devices and computers for the 3.0-transition. The new interface will retain the same architecture as USB 2.0, meaning the ports will be backward compatible. Delivering 10 times the bandwidth of its predecessor, USB 3.0 will achieve speeds of up to 4.8 Gb/s, which translates to 600 megabytes per second.

USB 3.0 comes at good timing, given the increasing size of data files and storage devices consumers and professionals are dealing with today. Intel's move is also directly competing with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers upcoming speed boost of the FireWire data-transfer interface, expected the end of the year.

How to Use Your Laptop While Driving

A headset is now the law in most states if you want to use your cellphone while driving. But what about your laptop?

Here’s a low-tech hack from a New York Times reader who uses a laptop while driving to chat with his wife, who has hearing loss.

Use brackets to hold a laptop in the car. Combine it with a lapel mike and a voice recognition software such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Add in a wireless card, and this could also be an easy way to get online and use a laptop from your car. Just be sure to keep your eyes -- and your mind -- on the road.

Silent Alarm Clock Wakes You Up With Good Vibrations, Smooths Roommate Relations

Back when I was in college, one of my most frustrating experiences involved a roommate in my dormitory apartment who mistakenly believed that she would be able to wake up daily for her 8:30am lecture series. Said roommate could sleep through an elephant parade. Oh how I seethed in the mornings as I clutched my pillow to my head, begging for the noise to pleasepleaseplease just STOP. If only this alarm were available back then. The Silent Alarm Clock, designed by Johan Brengesjo, uses a wireless rubber ring that vibrates to wake you up in a tactile, noiseless fashion. Though it's just a concept device right now, somebody ought to make and market one right quick. Think of how many friendships it could save!

DIY XR3 225 MPG Hybrid Car Kit Finally Finished, Hits the Road Soon for $25,000

When we last left gearhead Robert Q. Riley and his three-wheeled DIY 225 MPG XR3 car kit in March 2007, rumor had it drivers would be zipping around roadways in it by May. Turns out the DIY hybrid market is tougher than expected, because just this week word was the XR3 was finally finished and "coming soon"—again. And while the video of the completed car in action made me think of Centauri from The Last Starfighter for some reason, this futuristic looking kit actually uses readily available 21rst century innards to get from A to B. We hope "soon" this year doesn't mean "in one year" like it did in 2007.

Casio G-Shock G8100A-5 Wristwatch is Barely Steampunk

Seriously, this steampunk thing is getting out of hand. Like with this Casio G-Shock G8100A-5 wristwatch. They took a Casio watch, slapped on some bronze paint, and now everyone and their steam-powered mechanical dog is calling it steampunk. Enough! If you're going to charge $100 for a bronze-colored watch and have people start calling it steampunk, it had damn well better come powered by a miniature lever-pulling version of K.W. Jeter.

Photographs Enhance Video in Absolutely Unbelievable Ways

Before Gizmodo, I worked in the bowels of the broadcast industry for a number of years. I was either shooting video or cutting video every day, all day. And while Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects were both tools I used with some proficiency on a daily basis, I've never seen a post production demo as incredible as this clip from the University of Washington.

Essentially, you shoot some crappy, low-rez video of a still scene. You then reshoot the same scene with a digital camera (with higher resolution). Software can automagically combine these images to upconvert the video AND fix problems in the image— all while compensating for 3D space. Make sense? The remarkable demo will clarify things a bit:

Using Photographs to Enhance Videos of a Static Scene from pro on Vimeo.

What's especially notable is that the software can fill in the nasty bits of the scene despite the videographer/photographer rotating their view (you see this as they shoot around the tree) and despite any lens differences (the software can compensate for different lens sizes/distortions).

Also, note that many details from the source video are retained (the glass reflections in the statue shot may be the best example), which means that the photograph's information isn't the only information we see in the composite image.

I'm not quite convinced that the entire process is quite as automatic as the students would make it, but the technology is extremely promising all the same. And at this point, it should only be a matter of time before we see the idea work its way into our favorite post production products.

Lenovo's Ideapad U8 MID Under Starter's Orders at Olympics

Way back in April was when we first showed you details on Lenovo's Ideapad U8 mobile internet device, and Lenovo's just launched it at the Beijing Olympics. The palmtop phone/PC has an Intel Atom Z500 ticking away inside at 800MHz, GPS, dual cameras, and with 1GB of RAM and a sizable 6GB SSD. Connectivity-wise, it's fully loaded with 802.11 b/g wi-fi, Bluetooth, EDGE, 3G support and apparently "WiMAX support." There's also a dongle for picking up China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting signals so you can watch the Olympics for free. But therein lies the rub: The 10.6-ounce, vaguely PSP-like U8 is a China-only gizmo, so you won't care that it'll have a price "equivalent" to other smartphones.
